除了……还……

Pattern

除了 + A + 还/也 + B

Add another item or action besides the first one.

How it works

除了 A，还/也 B means “besides A, also B”: 除了汉语，我还学英语. 还 emphasizes “in addition”; 也 is close in meaning.

Do not mix this with 除了……都……, which means “except A, all…”: 除了周末，我每天都上班.

The subject can come before 除了 or after it, but keep the sentence consistent and put 还/也 before the second verb.

Examples

除了汉语，我还学英语。

chú le hàn yǔ，wǒ hái xué yīng yǔ。

Besides Chinese, I also study English.

除了垃圾分类，我们还能做什么？

chú le lā jī fēn lèi，wǒ men hái néng zuò shén me？

Besides sorting waste, what else can we do?

他除了会唱歌，还会弹钢琴。

tā chú le huì chàng gē，hái huì tán gāngqín。

Common mistakes

除了汉语，我都学英语。

除了汉语，我还学英语。

For “besides… also…”, use 还/也, not 都.

除了唱歌，他还唱歌。

除了唱歌，他还跳舞。

The second item should add new information, not repeat the first.
