How to use a Chinese writing worksheet
A worksheet works best when it is short and repeated. Pick five to eight characters that you are actually learning, download or print the sheet, and write each character once while saying the pinyin aloud. Stop before your hand gets tired. Come back the next day and write the same characters from memory.
Use Trace when you need light guides, Copy when one example is enough, and Recall when you want blank grids with only the pinyin and meaning as prompts. Trace two or three times, then cover the guide with your hand or switch to Recall and write from memory. Copying without recall feels productive but fades quickly.
Check the animated stroke order before you write. The order is part of the shape; writing in the wrong sequence makes the character harder to balance and remember.
田字格 or 米字格?
田字格 divides the square into four smaller squares with a cross. It is the standard beginner grid and is useful for learning where each part sits.
米字格 adds two diagonals. It gives more guidance for diagonal strokes and for characters that spread from the center, such as 永, 水 and 火.
Use 田字格 first, then switch to 米字格 when a character has strong diagonals. The grid is a scaffold, not a permanent crutch: eventually write on plain paper.
Questions about the worksheets
Are these Chinese character worksheets free?+
Yes. Generate a sheet, download a PDF, print it, or use your browser's Save as PDF. No account is required.
What is the difference between 田字格 and 米字格?+
田字格 has a horizontal and vertical center line, which helps with position and proportion. 米字格 adds diagonals, which helps with balance and diagonal strokes.
Can I choose tracing, copying or dictation?+
Yes. Trace gives every practice cell a light character to trace. Copy shows one solid example and leaves the rest blank. Recall leaves every cell blank and uses the pinyin and meaning as prompts. Pinyin and meaning can each be turned off.
Can I generate worksheets from HSK vocabulary?+
Yes. Pick an HSK level and a batch; the generator loads up to 48 unique characters from that level into the worksheet. Each level is split into batches so the pages stay printable.
How many characters fit on one A4 page?+
Five or six characters, depending on how many cells per row you choose. Five cells per row uses five characters per page; six to eight cells use six. Fewer characters leave more room for larger writing.
How is the PDF generated?+
The PDF is assembled in your browser: each A4 page is drawn to a canvas and saved as a PDF. Your characters are not uploaded and no Chinese font is downloaded. Because the pages are images, the PDF text is not selectable.
Can teachers use these in class?+
Yes, for personal and classroom use. Do not resell the generated sheets or the dictionary data.
