Acerca de HanziSkills

Por qué existe HanziSkills, cómo se construye el diccionario y de dónde vienen los datos.

HanziSkills is a free Chinese character dictionary built around a simple question: what does a learner need in order to use one character well? The answer is more than a definition. It is the pronunciation, the tone, the stroke order, the structure, the words that use it — and a way to practise.

The site currently contains 9,565 character records, with 4,809 high-frequency characters included in the searchable index, and 20,278 published words. Character pages include animated stroke order, pinyin, English definitions, radicals, components, etymology hints, common words and related characters. The interface is available in eight languages; dictionary definitions are in English for now.

How the dictionary is built

The data is generated from open sources at build time. Character forms, stroke paths, radicals and decomposition come from Make Me a Hanzi and the hanzi-writer-data package. Definitions and word readings are adapted from CC-CEDICT. Simplified/traditional mapping uses OpenCC. Frequency ordering comes from wordfreq. The site does not scrape or copy proprietary dictionaries.

Every page is generated from the same structured records, so corrections can be applied consistently. The data is versioned with the site, and the generation script is part of the repository.

Data licences

  • Complete HSK Vocabulary — MIT License; HSK 1–6 level/word lists and pinyin/meanings shown on HSK pages.

Privacy and accounts

The dictionary is usable without an account. An optional account stores an email address, a scrypt password hash and your saved characters. Audio is generated by a self-hosted text-to-speech service and cached on the server; the text you play is a character or word from the dictionary, not personal content. Read the full privacy policy.

Corrections and contact

Dictionary data is never perfect. If a definition, reading or stroke animation is wrong, send the character and the correction to [email protected]. The same address is used for licensing questions and account deletion requests.
