Say that something changes continuously and becomes more and more…

How it works

越来越 + adjective means “more and more…”: 天气越来越冷. It describes a change over time, not a fixed quality.

Do not add 很 or 非常 before the adjective: 越来越很冷 is wrong. For verbs, use 越来越 + 喜欢/想/会 etc.

A related but different pattern is 越……越……: 越学越有意思, “the more you study, the more interesting it becomes”.

Examples

天气越来越冷了。

tiān qì yuè lái yuè lěng le。

The weather is getting colder and colder.

他的汉语越来越好。

tā de hàn yǔ yuè lái yuè hǎo。

His Chinese is getting better and better.

我越来越喜欢这个城市。

wǒ yuè lái yuè xǐ huan zhè ge chéng shì。

I like this city more and more.

街上的人越来越多了。

jiē shang de rén yuè lái yuè duō le。

There are more and more people on the street.

Common mistakes

天气越来越很冷。

天气越来越冷。

Do not add 很 after 越来越.

我越来越喜欢很这个城市。

我越来越喜欢这个城市。

越来越 already carries the idea of degree; keep the object clean.
